National Marine Park of Zakynthos (N.M.P.Z.)

National Marine Park of Zakynthos (N.M.P.Z.)

The National Marine Park of Zakynthos (N.M.P.Z.), which was established by the Presidential Decree (PD 906/D/1999), is a protected area located in Zakynthos' island and was the first one in Greece managed by a Management Agency.

The mission of N.M.P.Z. is to protect the nesting beaches of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta, the monk seal Monachus monachus habitat and population, the avifauna, terrestrial and coastal flora and fauna, the marine ecosystem and fish stocks. In parallel, the Park is engaged in local development activities that are in line with nature conservation, as well as landscape and cultural heritage preservation.

Within the framework of Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean Region project the National Marine Park of Zakynthos was among the pilot action sites for the identification, monitoring and management of socio economic (visitors, professional and leisure activities…), abiotic (temperature, beach morphology, sand composition, erosion…) and biotic parameters (nests repartition, predators, vegetation…) in order for the best carrying capacity of nesting areas (terrestrial and marine) to be defined and adaptive management measures (nest protection and relocations, visitors awareness, participative approach) to be implemented.
