Kuriat islands – Monastir: The success story of co-management for a future MPA (Marine Protected Area)
When the administration and civil society work together for biodiversity conservation, amazing things can happen. Kuriat islands is the primary nesting site of marine turtles Tunisia, with the number of nests increasing every year. In 2020 we recorded 45 nests.
By combining the strengths of public administration and in particular Ministry of Environment, Coastal Protection and Planning Agency Tunisia (APAL) and INSTM , regional bodies - Specially Protected Areas Regional Activity Center (SPA/RAC) and NGO knowledge - Notre Grand Bleu, we managed to effectively protect seaturtles and marine and coastal environment in Kuriat islands - Monastir in Tunisia.
