Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean Region Phase I
Sea turtle protection (SPA/RAC)
- Monitoring known nesting sites of marine turtles.
- Explore the Libyan coastal beaches to identify new nesting sites.
- Assess the quality of the beaches for nesting and incubation on new potential nesting areas.
- Design specific conservation measures for known and sporadic nesting areas.
- Monitor sea turtle nest temperatures using dataloggers.
- Collect samples for isotope and genetic analysis from nesting females and hatchlings.
- Update the Libyan National Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Turtles.
- Update the report “The Marine Turtles in Libya 2005-2013”.

Activities
- Monitoring of known nesting sites & Exploration of new beaches to identify possible new nesting sites.
- Set up new national sea turtles stranding network and collect stranding data.
- Assessment of the implementation of the National Action Plan for the conservation of sea turtles in Libya.
- Awareness raising of fishermen and other target groups, NGOs, fishermen, organisations, local community and all relevant stakeholders advocate for effective management and site protection in Libya (Sirte & Farwa coastlines).
- Establish sustainable monitoring schemes in Sirte and Farwa within its management plan in Libya (Sirte & Farwa coastlines).
